The property is a 4 bedroom penthouse apartment set within a 7-storey Edwardian terrace house in Mayfair. The original layout was cramped and compartmentalised with a series of hallways joined up by tight doorways and arches. The kitchen was distanced from the living and dining room, and the bedrooms were tucked uncomfortably below the raked ceilings of the mansard roof.
The owners wanted a luxurious modern pied-à-terre suited for entertainment.
We transformed the living areas by opening up the hallways and relocating the kitchen to form a series of interconnected spaces around a central bar that is designed for entertainment. The invisible fire doors separating these spaces can be fully hidden in recessed pockets when opened to form a zoned open plan where different modes of socialisation can take place without feeling cut off from one another.
The bathrooms and ensuite are rearranged to make optimum use of the awkward existing roof geometry whilst the bedrooms are given the clear ceiling spans to elevate their use.
